It is. The series was published by a publisher before, but I got the rights back. Now I self publish it under my publishing company Omeow Comics. You can buy copies for yourself and your buddies.

As I read more manga, I see them use more and more edited photo backgrounds with noise gradient added, and I wonder how they get away with it.

It's a mix of both. I'll draw the backgrounds myself this time and see what happens. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate your experienced and well meaning feedback and critiques from a published and popular artist like yourself. I am grateful.
