Scott Mc Cloud explained why in this book. Everyone should read it, it's a masterpiece.
TO summarize it in a few words, comics are trying to aim for realism and thus the identification to the character and the fictional world inside is harder. The panels seems "frozen in time"
And despite that, the art is not particularly that impressive, especially the background.

Manga is different, the characters are abstracted so they push onto the realm of idea. Identification is easy + the fictional is often very detailed with contemplative panels and a strong sense of realism when it comes to environments
The end result is what you said: "Soul", it's easy to enter inside a manga, unlike a comic book.
It doesn't help that a manga has no limitation when it comes the lenght in which it wants to describe an action or an event. Goku can fight Freezer for 100 pages because chapters are delivered often while comics are limited to 16 pages when serialized, and the product, not the story inside, is what is being bought. A fight must thus begin and end within those pages, at least usually
