You could have used the rule of thirds without even knowing what he looks like around the eyes. The rule of thirds applies literally to everyone (except super heroic guys like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Ron Moss have just little bit more in their jawline).

Eyes are always in the middle of the head (top being top of the cranium, and bottom being the tip of the jaw), and face and be divided in to three equal parts. From hairline to eyebrow line, from eyebrow line to base of the nose (where nose attaches to the upper lip, the tip of the nose might be on different place depending on shape of the said nose and perspective. But the connection point can be estimated even if the tip would obscure it) and from the base of the nose to jaw (okay here you can add just a little nudge to the jaw more if you want to do like Christian Bale or Arnold, but not surprisingly much).

I would have approached this as first finding the line of the eyes. Roughly from tear duct to tear duct - a horizontal line. Then the brow ridge (it's really an arch). Then estimating the width, maybe taking a step back from the drawing or holding it at arms length and making the decision. Then sketching in the keystone (V or / / shape depending if its frontal profile or three quarters) where nose connects to the forehead. It's really nice to place it as first thing as it helps estimating where to place the eyes, and how deep they are.

30 minutes is a bit much for this kind of study, I'd recommend doing few 5 minute studies and then maybe one 10 minutes. The key to start perceiving the relations are quick studies that take few minutes. Like one teacher once said, most of the mistakes of the drawing are done during the first two minutes. If you get the initial two minutes right, the rest is pretty easy.
