kind of agree that he should've elaborated a bit on shading, but arguably its not really a main concern in the book. as im getting the impression that shading is learnt later after learning perspective and what else.
also take your time on drawing, seems like to me you've rushed. and make the circles bit smaller to get rid of unecessary spaces. if you feel like you're frustrated, take a time off. hell a time off for a week is fine.
