Slipshine in particular looks like it has a neat set up from a business point of view- it has a variety of original stories but you can only see the opening pages before you have to pay.

Those are both world class shit and will cost you less than like 2k US by the time all's said and done. There's no reason to go to art school in 2015+4; art and animation are an incredibly saturated field and the risk of being in debt up to your ball sack for the rest of your fucking life far outweighs the reward of being some overworked industry drone barely scraping by

Your parents are 100% right.

Don't go to art school lol, especially if you're not good enough to get a very generous scholarship or have just picked up a pencil recently. Your two to four years will not be transformative enough to put you in the position of becoming a paid working artist unless you have already been drawing fairly consistently up to this point. They will however certainly put you in the position of being in debt for the rest of your natural life.

Get a part time job and hang out with your parents hopefully rent-free for a few years instead. Buy into and/or even pirate online content, get a few books-start building a library of instruction and inspiration. Walk in on a local school's life drawing sessions or find "pay as you go" one-off classes if available. Go to the zoo and draw people and animals. Whatever you do don't sign your life away to some vampiric money lender that's just going to go through the same shit your many, many less expensive and less linear options will.

There is absolutely no reason to go to an art school of all things right out of highschool. Tell her to get a part time job and try and build a MAJOR scholarship-worthy portfolio until she's 23 if she's still set on school by that time.

Self-taught artists make up a significant portion of every art-oriented industry. Not all of them are particularly good (Rob Liefeld being among them) but they not only exist but do so in large numbers.
