Why DID Rubens paint his women so fat?
He bitched about fatties IRL, and it wasn't fashionable as many claim, see the Rokeby Venus for another version of feminine beauty from the same period.

I love this Venus by Velazquez because

a) The skill level is crazy, the ease with how the fabrics look painted, the soft line all around the body.

b) It shows that Spanish taste was for slim women, thus undoing the notion that olden days painters liked chubby women, or women modelled from men, with bolted on soft parts.

c) Cleverly sexy without being lewd or crude.

European ideals (at least in Spain) were for alabaster skinned, slim bodies, as shown to perfection by Velazquez.
