You need to block in the background as well as colors are relative and without it you cannot truly be accurate. Don't be afraid of putting defined shapes in the initial stage even if they're wrong up close. Work from a zoomed out canvas and then worry about softening shapes and edges after you have the thumbnails of each reading the same.

This was actually my first photostudy in a year or so and I tried it because I wanted to force myself to finally try one. You can see it in the initial line-drawing which isn't very accurate, and even up to now where the skull and posture has warped compared to the original.
The biggest thing I think is working the image as a whole, when you compare >>3663124
to >>3665487 and >>3664073 in terms of just the jaw jewelry, >>3663124 probably isnt much better in terms of measurements and placement of the jems but it looks so much better because he's drawing not the jewelry flat on but the impression of it like >>3664112
recommends. The light and dark is there and your mind fills the rest.

When I paint it I'm having 3 windows open, one for my painting, one for the reference right by it and one for me to actually paint on, and as I'm working it Im looking mostly at the zoomed out painting, seeing if the big overall shapes are matching up, or if my random strokes are summing up to the impression of jewelry. For this photostudy the mindset I have right now isnt to get an exact 1:1 copy but to learn how to imply the visual info in the reference in a painting without actually having to copy every pixel.
