A lot of beg books and even some of the perspective books have sections about shades, but it is the Keys to Drawing which has the most complete "guide" about shading and later about rendering: pic related. Framed Perspective volume 2 gets honorable mention.

And no book in particular taught me this messy charcoal / pencil "style", i simply developed as i kept drawing. I had to make my own charcoal and pencil brush back in GIMP which then i later ported into Krita. There is nothing special about the way how i draw these: the more you keep drawing in 1 area the darker it gets (or lighter if i color pick white). If i want gentle gradient i use low pressure, if i want solid line i press harder. If i overdo it i switch to eraser (transparent color) and "draw" until it gets lighter. And i switch between charcoal (large areas), charcoal pencil (medium areas) or pencil (details) as needed.

The fuzzy textures inside the brushes make the drawing look better than it deserves honestly: it hides the brush strokes and invites the human brain to fill in the gaps. The drawing would look way worse if i tried to make it with just hard round brush with opacity.

Hello BEG, missed two days. Procrastination is a bitch. I am bitch. Notice how you can see where i had to draw over already drawn shades. This is last time i am using opacity for anything

I have a challenge for you anon. Draw you character from side, from top and from bottom. Also from 3/4 angle. You know, to force yourself out of your comfort zone
