This. FWAP teaches a very advanced subject in an interesting way that might be hit or miss for some people but by the end of the book the basics are literally all there.

I think you're overestimating Hampton, for one. His personal work sucks and every drawing has the same neanderthal face-he doesn't even get into deep anatomy; there is little that separates Hampton's book from something like the "How to Draw Manga" series which also features superficial anatomy and construction whether they call it that or not. Anatomy and construction are tools that are clearly in use for every picture you've posted whether done well or not. If you think you can do without it then go ahead, post your no-anatomy no-construction drawings for us to admire while you're at it. .

>His method of blocking out facial features, must that always apply or only if you're drawing a character who could benefit from it like a comical chubby guy?

Always; it's construction. You don't always have to draw the underlying construction, many artists don't, but you certainly have to understand it.

>Headband is black and white, shirt is pink and blue.

Might be pretty jarring, I don't know.

I think they could, but Fun With a Pencil is a deceptively advanced book because it requires the reader to be able to draw ellipses and circles fairly well. She needs some kind of terse, expedient introduction to observational drawing and to supplement the things I suggested earlier, perhaps to have her practice the dynamic sketching techniques from Peter Han's videos would be a good idea to start before moving on to actual literature too, gnomesaiyan?

The biggest problem dealing with a young teenager is trying to make something that's pretty boring fun without being condescending. I really like the reward idea too.

How about instead of worrying about spoonfeeding refs to your ostensible competition or trolling some goofball's 1 thread out of another 150 in rotation that you happen to not like you go draw my dude? From one procrastinator to another let me tell you that I know what you're doing and you'd be way better off leaving well enough alone than being emotionally invested in the "quality" or lack thereof of this board. Mike is a good keeid, he dindu nuffin'

I really don't want to discourage you in saying all this either, even though it might feel kind of shitty to hear. Rather I'd like it to be uplifting. So many young adults that have only just begun to draw are pressured into going to expensive schools by their well-meaning friends and relatives who don't know any better. Because they had not developed their ability before they'd first entered the school these people more often than not leave these places not much better off artistically than the Beginner Thread users on /ic/, but unlike them they're saddled with tens of thousands of dollars in debt that will potentially burden them for decades.

Can you imagine it being 15 years from now and you're still paying $500 a month or more for your student debt, while working at a warehouse or something like that? You can avoid all that, you can study and draw hard for at least four years on your own volition and you will get to a decent level-or maybe you won't, but in either case at least you will be a free man who stood on his own two feet and fell on his shield instead of living as a slave for the rest of your youth.

>>Wait until someone sees your stuff online and offers you his money

It really does happen. I've personally offered to hire an artist on this very board myself at a competitive rate and I have no idea if they went to school or anything like that, why would I care? Their work is phenomenal. The deal fell through in the end for various reasons, but I was sincere and I haven't lost respect for them or their abilities. I may even try contacting them again some day, but the last thing I or anyone else cares about as someone looking to hire an artist is where they've been, when in the end it's only about what they're capable of. I've even been paid for work myself even though I was bad then and I'm still not very good.

Fun With a Pencil is in now way an absolute beginner book, it could hardly be considered a beginner book even. It's cheesy as hell but it's a deceptively advanced tome that delves into many esoteric subjects like perspective before the book's complete.

>it stretches out way too much on gooks

That's racist!

Mind you I am referring to the Intuos Large models and their working-class cousin the Giano exclusively. With them you're given plenty of space, and on monitors 20-inches and below they afford a level of control very comparable to a Cintiq in my experience-just oriented a little differently (and in some ways I like it better).

Knowing what I know now, assuming I was starting over owning nothing and could choose only one tablet for some contrived reason, I wouldn't take an Intuos Small or Medium if you gave it to me for free and paid me for the trouble.

That's not symbol drawing you dingus. Symbol drawing is when a non-artist is told to draw an "eye" and they draw a utilitarian representation of it (like the classic almond shape with a circle in it) because they don't understand what an eye actually looks like. Loomis is teaching you to draw form, which is primitive 3D shapes in arranged in a certain manner to resemble a figure or an eye or anything you can imagine. Did you remember to actually read the book by any chance?

You're a funny guy. Loomis teaches you "construction" which is a technique for drawing anything. You're not supposed to use his books like a "How to Draw Manga Girls" sort of way. You do Loomis so you can consolidate what the hell you're looking at when you want to draw something from imagination or from reference.

Just letting you know you're welcome to swing over to my asinine dead board /loomis/ on eight chan dot net (ehhh...) if anything bad happens. I highly doubt it will come to that, but I'm putting it out there just in case. If anything does happen we can use that board to discuss a more permanent solution if nothing else.
