Take Sam Nielson's class on Schoolism - it's cheap and he approaches learning value in a more analytical and scientific method than most artists would express to their student.

I'm in the same boat, OP. I've been looking at guides, tutorials, other works and also trying it myself. If I understand correctly the flat colors are in a normal layer and all the next layers on top are either multiply, screen or overlay. I guess it's something similar to pic related.

I've been struggling though since the outcome always ends up very dark and also can't create the same colors I've seen in works by other artists.

Here's another. Sketch, shadows, vaues, color only, all the layers so far together, and then rendered out version.

>Like why would they paint the ambient occlusion before the local colours?

It's a technique from 3D modeling. Some digital painters make use of it because it's faster and more accurate at rendering 3dimensional forms. It's basically just a slightly more advanced and structured technique of regular grayscale to color.

You're a fucking retard. Using a rendering process that is similar to what 3d programs do is something a lot of artists make use of. Doesn't mean they can't paint, it means it helps them to think structured to build up the lighting and 3dimensionality in an image.

That artist OP posted is infinitely better than you are. I know this hurts your ego, so you try to search for excuses and try to convince yourself that this is not actually as hard as it looks, even compare it to "photobashed garbage", but you are wrong. It is just a workflow the guy happens to prefer to end up with the result he wants. There is no magical barrier that somehow makes him unable to apply his knowledge to a different workflow if he wanted to. As much as you want to believe the contrary.

You are very obviously a very immature and bad artist. Same goes to >>1760992
