This is good.

You're getting pretty good at rendering. Some of these are better than others so I'm going to assume you're making progress.

The only thing is, these are pretty clearly copies from photos so it's hard to tell how strong your fundamentals are.

Do you have any life-drawing or sketches from imagination? If I saw that I could better tell how good your overall skillset is.

Thing is, copying directly from photos is fine for learning rendering and practicing your painting, but if you're only drawing the surface level, you're not really learning the structure of the underlying anatomy, or really understanding how light behaves in a real environment.

Do that too much, and you end up being the modern equivalent of the old-lady painter at the country art fair who's really good at copying photographs, but couldn't draw a figure from life or imagination to save her life.

Other than that, your shadows are too dark and black. Paint some reflected light into them.

I'm currently reading this book as my first dive into teaching myself how to draw better. Would I be better suited in reading through the book then starting over and drawing his examples, or should I draw what he's talking about as I go through?

Really, I just don't know what I should be doing to implement what he says. Any advice from someone whose learned this way would be nice.

Here's my recommendation:
do drawabox lesson 1
>http://drawabox.com/lesson/1

Then read Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing when you can draw boxes proficiently
