Depending on your interpretation of the eye, the rules have to be bent to trick your brain into reading the form correctly. The less landmarks your interpretation has, the harder it can be to convince the brain-- applying realistic proportions to the simplified eye can lead to things like the further eye looking too small or pupils appear misplaced.

Jane Mere very recently did a write up on eyes a couple weeks ago. I uploaded it here. Maybe this will help you guys. The most important thing to remember is that tricking the brain is more important than 1:1 realistic, 3d representations. In the end, it's about what looks good.
