I think people just forget or don't know how easy it is to set up a few lights in a 3D program and never have to guess where to put contours, shadows or specular lighting, not to mention just copy the ambient occlusion. It'd be all in front of you, calculated by the program, no time wasted, not guessing needed, all you need is a second monitor and you'd have the perfect setup.
