i think its best explained with hair.

long wavy lines vs sharp lines
long thin volumes vs big volumes vs volumes that taper
if you are trying to make more realistic art, do you want to simplify the hair strands to clumps, etc

by copying style, i mean understanding why kind of decisions the artist takes to produce the desired effect
