Depends on accuracy vs appeal (generally called "style"). If you have the underlying structure down, you can take it wherever you want, it can be very polished or close to realism (to the point where you reach human printer levels) or just add your own spice, this can either show in your brushwork, your palette or how simplified or graphic your work is.
Taste is a factor too, some things don't mix well together, think about "mario if he real" or hyper realistic Homer Simpson, if you can identify what doesn't work, you have a sense for what taste isn't, knowing what works and coming up with it yourself is the task, but that's what reference is for, having favorite artists is useful helps a lot too, now at least you have a landmark for your art journey.

You can definitely break it, it's even encouraged to do it just to test the limits of a palette, your pic is only for reference, it tends to work well, but if you want try it yourself, use a complimentary palette, but for one of the colors, shift the hue to one side (ex: Purple and Yellow, instead of yellow, try a bit of orange) and see how it looks. You can do this with any palette and change hues in a more abrupt way if you want, as long as your values work, experimenting with hues is fair game.
