Quick explanation for why drawing from life will make you shit at art:
Going back and forth between studying great artists and then drawing from imagination is like having a great teacher over your shoulder saying "No, faggot, that's not how you paint! You paint like this!" Whereas drawing from life will quickly make you start Krugging real fast and end up like the Napolean Dynamite kid when he did the drawing in the movie.
