Not sure if you are the OP but if you want to know my (and some actual published art critics) opinion on where art is heading, I can see a big interest in "romantic" art coming back. Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite, Art Nouveau, etc. Basically art that, once again, celebrates things like romantic notions and conventional beauty that art has shunned for over 100 years as being simplistic and overly sentimental.

If you are REALLY interested in this read a book called "Venus in Exile", the author talks about how the pendulum is swinging back in terms of what is getting displayed in galleries, etc. People are a lot more open to this art again.

Also, if the internet (flickr/tumblr/etc) is the new platform for what constitutes aesthetic preference among young people, there is a huge proliferation of art like pic related that have spiked in popularity in the past few years.
