Surrealism is the peak of art and no one can tell me differently. Painting something realistic that is "wrong" in a meaningful and thought provoking way that strikes the viewer takes two skills.
One, the skill to paint something realistically enough to give the scene that level of believability.
Two, the creativity to dream up a scenario to depict which fits the criteria of having a surreal quality that sparks, or at least that is how I describe it. Not every surreal image "sparks," some are just lame and the concept behind them isn't all that interesting. When one sparks, like Magritte's empire of light I can stare at it for a long time and the concept is burned in my head. No other art movement can accomplish that with such intensity or frequency for me.
