Yeah with the blades coming out of the water it is tricky. I was thinking just take a size 1 rigger brush or a 1 round sable and just lay down a bunch of little strokes but much like the main sketch they appear too flat and don't have the depth like in the photo.

I think keeping things clumped will help like you said though. I don't understand what you mean about smearing it.
