Try reading Keys to Drawing. At one point it talks about taking measurements (Chapter 3)

The book talks a lot about drawing what we see as opposed to drawing what we think that we see.

Loomis is good 'n all but I don't like it as the go-to book for beginners (Speaking as a relative beginner myself)
