To be successful in art, is construction completely and utterly necessary?

Whenever I do construction when I draw my faces always come out looking very unnatural and unhuman like.

The picture on the left I constructed, the picture on the right I did free hand with basic anatomical measurements.

For me constructing everything feels stifling, and it makes it harder to see things in 3D. Despite this, I understand it's also viewed as very necessary to most people.

An idea that I have that might work is that I should draw my faces unconstructed at first, then I will go back and add construction to it.

I don't know if this defeats the purpose of construction in the first place though.
