doesn't have to be charcoal, just try putting in values around your figure. It makes it feel more like the belong in the space if the values around them help to describe their form. especially around areas where there is a highlight it will be made brighter if its not against a white background.

all values in a drawing are about its relationship, white isn't bright just for being white its bright if it is near a darker value.
This is why when drawing a single subject people will put tones or hatching in the background.
Lines placed around the figure are not there to make a circle around the form outlines are only ever used to deepen the relationship of the edge of one object against another.

All of this can be discovered and mastered by drawing from life, and not photographs. Once you understand edges and basic construction and values you can study photos if you want
