I started recently and have been enjoying "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". The questions you've raised seem to get addressed later when the book moves on from thought exercises (like this one) to drawing fundamentals.

My take away from this exercise wasn't about reproducing it perfectly but preventing the brain from wanting to redraw it with our symbol 'shorthand' system. Which you've done successfully.
