Hey /ic/ I'm not an art student. Post whatever kind of art you want and I'll critique it. It doesn't have to be very good, but remember to put effort into your work.

Why is starting out so difficult?

I remember learning the guitar and piano when I was in high school. Everyone else in class was way, way better than me. They were playing (what I thought to be at the time) crazy solos, metal riffs, and I was still trying to remember chords. Playing something like Don't Fear The Reaper was crazy for me. I would practice for hours every day until I could play it """decently""".

Why is it not the same for drawing? I practice something but after a couple weeks I just collapse over what feels like an immense negative pressure. The feeling of not being able to play my favorite songs was never bad. I'd butcher the song, play it slow and not even pay attention to my progress. But with drawing, I pump out 15 turds, eventually something I like and I'm proud/happy with, then another 15 turds and I can't take the shittiness anymore.

Especially with studies. I'll read the first couple chapters of a book, like any book you'd find on /ic/, but eventually it makes absolutely no sense to me and no matter where I look, I can't wrap my head around the concept and I give up.

Why the fuck is drawing this way?

Draw with F O R M

You don't necessarily have to draw every single box out but as long as you try to understand the underlying structure you can start to get out of symbol drawing.

It's more of a shift in a way of thinking than anything else.

"symbol drawing" is when people don't understand what they're drawing. It looks flat because they draw with contour instead of form.

Fuck, I forgot, everything is based on construction. You have to see 3d forms in your mind and be able to recreate a box, sphere, cylinder in any angle to be able to successfully construct anything.

Everything is based off the gesture but after you get the gesture down putting 3d shapes in perspective is a must. You have to deconstruct any form into basic shapes to get anything done. Boxes are extremely important, so be sure to be studding them.
