Some of the reasons why "Tumblr" art is often so ugly:

1/? Thinking that just adding more lines and detail to a drawing can convey certain subtle shapes (such as the "Tumblr nose" being garishly red or covered in hatch marks that don't actually add to the depth of the shape, but instead make it look like the nose region is a gaping hole in the face) with no regard to what makes sense or even looks good. Lines on the cheekbones themselves but no shading under the cheekbones? Definitely makes sense. Doesn't make it look like your character has sharpie marks all over their cheeks at all. Looks great.
