Make sure you understand fantasy's roots then. LOTR is so loved because it is a retelling of ancient Aryan myths, hamartia and virtues everyone subconsciously identifies with, right down to the racialism (orcs = another tribe).

RR Martin tried to subvert it and failed because he never finished the epic, and literally sold the rights to finish his 'baby' to some money grabbing TV jews, hence why he's never going to wrap it up and the show is a joke now.

I reccomend you listen to The Poz Button's special episode on Tolkien and George RR Martin, it's very very informative. You can stream it easily on The Right Stuff.com, just search on their website for "Poz Button" and it's there.
