There's a difference between using references and straight up tracing shit.
Straight up tracing shit without construction gives your art that funky "collage" vibe, where it's a bunch of flat cardboard cutouts that dont interact with each other.

Everything greg land does is a terrifying frankenstein abomination of stuff he pasted together in photoshop, ran a filter over and then traced.
