So backgrounds, I am lost. really want that visual novel feel for backgrounds but I am only have meh luck on finding them. Best I can tell is people are using 3d models or pictures and painting over them with a solid understanding of basics.

So what I am asking is there any tutorials with tips and tricks on getting that VN background feel? Something akin to a step by step process?
