I in no way want to imply I'm amazing, but I formed a decent following in the short time I posted with a pseudonym.
In my experience, as a young man, I started to cringe to the things I drew and got me a piece of the internet's attention. I found out that this wasn't a part of me that I wanted to keep developing, I couldn't be proud of the things I did. I mean, would you show the anime girl with 10k likes on twitter to your mother? With a straight face? Would you present yourself with a lady saying you are an "anime artist"? I concluded that it was a distraction that would lead me nowhere except meeting geeks and weirdos.
I think the same thing applies to some of the so called nsfw artists that are somewhat competent at their craft, even more if they are young (18-24) and still are figuring out who they want to be and what path they want to choose, what ideal of a man they strive to become.
The only positives I got from doing this online art thing was the fact that I could buy any collectible figure I wanted at any time, I just needed to open a commission slot for whatever the figure price was and that was it, not much to be proud of. The acquaintances I met? Long far gone since I yanked everything. The experiences I had online? Time wasted in my opinion.

Can't see anyone on his mid 40's drawing anime girls for a living and not being miserable, conscious of it or not. Maybe most of those artists in your mind came to the same conclusion and that's why they vanished.
