Few things:

+ You're trying to draw an onion that is sitting in a bright white space, but you're trying to use some muddy, greyish background. This will needlessly throw you off - for the sake of what you're trying to study, just use the white background.

+ Use a larger brush and make larger strokes. It looks like you're going in with a much smaller brush and just scribbling around, while not capturing the overall important details & textures. When rendering, it's more important to capture the overall feel & gesture of the details than it is the exact, pixel-for-pixel details. Think about the bigger, cohesive picture. Zoom out a bit and just block things in in a more simplified manner.

+ Use a brush with a harder edge (like the default round brush). Whatever you're using now looks terribly out of focus, and makes the form suffer.

+ The onion is much more saturated than it looks - especially towards the top where you get that deep redish/magenta.. Consider using more saturated colors.

Just some thoughts - hope this helps!
