It's because they can't into rendering.

They waited until they were a "good enough" level sketching with a pencil and didn't practice enough with rendering.

One skill set got left behind while they advanced and advanced in another.

What are they going to do? Not render their sketches forever? They need the practice to catch up.

It's like if you only did barbell curls and bench press. All your other muscles won't get bigger and your entire silhouette is going to be misshapen and unpleasing to look at.
