You are setting yourself up for failure.

You picked up a subject that contains a fuckton o f different textures, colors, kitten and mouse anatomy and trying to tackle it all at once while you're struggling with the absolute basics regarding values and light. It's like trying to learn the basics of boxing by challenging Mike Tyson to a fight as your first step.

Try to paint a solid simple shape like a cube painted white in black and white in that lighting setup first. Do a simple object realistically first, you have plenty of time before you'll have to worry about kitten proportions.
