I started using this program (100% free) called designdoll that has helped me a lot. You can edit size/features pretty simple (but custom), height, lighting, poses etc.

I started just drawing over them but they make good reference too. After tracing them a few times I've started to understand poses/portions a lot better and can free hand/see mistakes a lot easier too. Pic related (not mine)

You can get it or read more from terawall.net

The site has little tutorials and proposed models you can load onto your program. But it's really easy to learn, I just downloaded it and played around and got it easy
