it depends mostly on the geography of the face to know where are the bumps and hols and what is the overall shape compared to the light. On color, usually you can just go from l light to dark an getting more saturated in the midtones and less and less as you approach the extremes. So highlights and shadows could be less saturated. You can also try to move the color from red to blue at the darker places that can produce a nice effect if you know how to do it. But a lot depends on the color of the ambient light as well. Remember that colors do not exist in a vacuum, they exist compared to each other.
