>it's like becoming an impressionist
>is follow the trappings of that style

This.
Some anime hating crab on /ic/ telling you to learn realistic anatomy and loomis and western art fundies before drawing anime is like a classical realist painter telling an aspiring impressionist he must first learn to draw in the "correct" classic realist style before he can "break down" reality into the dots and dashes and abstractions and break the rules in the impressionist style.

This is made all the more relevant for the fact that the Impressionists themselves were inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e artwork and wanted to copy them, and to do that they just followed the trappings of the style too, for some just the composition/posing, others the linework and colors.

19th century /ic/
>How do I draw ukiyo-e?
