>life is anything you make it to be

The problem with that is that we all have to deal with the consequences of other people's decisions. All the positive thinking in the world won't help if someone decides to drop a bomb on your head.

Also I'm not convinced this world is worth my time and effort.

Anyway Miyazaki, in spite of all his success and his legendary status, is pretty negative and cynical about the world at large, and his impact on it.

>Can polishing a turd provide a valuable learning experience?

Yes. I've had paintings where I realized 2/3rds of the way through weren't going to look as good as I'd envisioned them, but I pushed through to completion because I realized that even if I wasn't super pleased with the final result, I would learn something from the process.

The hardest part of painting, at least for me, is the last 15%, the detailing, because you don't make dramatic progress like you do earlier in the construction of the piece, and it's easy to fall into the trap of noodling on the piece and making no progress.

So you need to practice that, but you can't do it unless you've done the rest of the painting. Not every painting is going to be a masterpiece, but every painting can be a learning experience.

HOWEVER, if you notice a problem with a composition early on fix it then. Don't wait. And if you think a piece is *utterly* worthless, drop it and move on.

I tend to have a handful of pieces in progress at any given time, so I'll jump back and forth on them to avoid tedium.
