It might come down to color selection and bending the rules with light. A technique I've seen used is utilizing masking fluid to cover your brightest areas including specular zones and sharp light sweeps along contours. This will help guide your watercolour away from those areas and you won't have to worry about brush control *quite* as much. Contrast between darks and lights will help readability, maybe emboldening the darks of the muddled and organic background features while celebrating the figure of the subject with bright sharp forms will help. here's a quick take to convey a hypothetical-
