I found that it's mostly the ones from China that are shit.

After just experimenting with painting and colour palettes, I realized that Chinese fantasy artists in particular often have a quick and dirty method of blasting contrast in their images in some way with poorly faking subsurface scattering in either clothes, hair or flesh tones and rely solely on that to impress the viewer.

The flesh may look flat and dull but they hide it with that aforementioned SSS technique and bloom or similarly bland atmospheric perspective.

It's not limited to China either, even western audience that has looked into their methods or are influenced by their art does this, like Genzoman or Omar Dogan. REIQ used to do this too but he sort of grown out of it and his glowing plastic doll skin matches his pinup style.

OPs picture suffers too from that China method. Pure white tints for a fill light and dull black tints for shadows. Blasted contrast and weird rim lights that are dull looking as if they're not even light.

Seeing this stuff really makes me appreciate the old and recent masters much more though.

Do you think applying for the online classes for Watts Atelier would be the most bang for your buck in online teaching ?

I've looked at a ton of schools in North America and almost of all them are way too expensive for what they offer.

My main concern is quality of the teaching and Watts seems to offer that. But there are other options. (CGMA Academy, New Masters Academy)
