Decided to just call it a day and draw the hair. It's far from perfect but I already spend way too much time on it, and it's finally something I'm okay with. Learned a couple of things from the beginning through the end, thought, so I'm happy about that. And yes I did try to do highlights with an eraser and I hate it as much as you do.
