It shouldn't matter how long it takes, keep it simple, think of the entire reference as an abstract set of simple shapes. you refine proportion as you go, as far as this study is concerned (in my eyes at least) its more suited as a value/shape study. i wouldn't worry about drawing because its just too blurry to tell. as you get more and more specific you can begin to make better judgements about the whole picture, as compared to a floating rock with a deep shadow in the ether of grey.
