the technique is kinda self explanatory, you just do what you see. you're using the rhythms & contrasts of the hatching to guide the eye across instead of contrasts of color. otherwise, the same rules of value apply, you're simply arriving at them through negatives of space.

read guptil's books and books on etching if you want more of a guide, but getting gud at this style is largely just a case of observation, study & practice. play around with different styles of hatching and see how you can give the effect of different textures. drawing this way is fun but it takes fucking forever
