You gotta see the facial planes and build the face, otherwise you're pretty much symbol drawing.

This isn't very helpful advice either... You are listing what is wrong, but not giving detailed advice on what to fix or how to proceed in the right direction. If you guys are so good at this then give the bloke some constructive advice ...

for example: "..the nose is awkwardly tilted BECAUSE you did not decide on which angle the features were pointing in beforehand.. Use lines, blocks for reference to carefully construct the facial features one by one, perhaps after you have decided the figure's final structure (because the face's angle will rely heavily on how it is connected to the neck).

The problem is indeed perspective, anatomy and proportions, but uhh... that's a really vague starting point and excuse of a critique to give someone. Every artist, or focused artist, strives to work on those topics already by making works in progress. Structured, detailed critique is what can help people proceed (along with studying of course, but an outside opinion or perspective can be more helpful than ANY book, video, or reference) in the particular drawing. And we all know each drawing that's completed is indeed practice!
