The saddest part of all, is he's trying to become professional. You can't expect to get hired if what you're "creating" isn't your work. There's a fine line between referencing and copying/painting over. Professional artist use references to help guide them, people like him use "references" to create their art. There is no grey area in this, if what you put on paper isn't completely your doing, your not an artist.
