I'm struggling to build a fanbase (got 9 followers in 2014 yaaaayyy). Blamed it on lack of skill, but following discussions on Patreon, I got it: I need to pander to the masses.

But what exactly is popular these days? Anime? Anything else? Pin-ups?
What kind of art is suitable for getting momentum, a bit of print selling and freelancing while I still work on getting my skill up to MTG level? (I'm only intermediate now)

No, not really because your point is fucking dumb in general. There are lots of pin-up and erotica artists around who make WAY more money with commissions than furry porn artists. Erotic commissions, fanart, softcore etc are a huge fucking market, whereis fetish porn is by default a niché industry. Which is the only reason why these artists can make money with it, because the competition is weak to nonexistent.
