Pay attention to your saturation, edges, and contrasts. Missing the ball on the three of them creates muddy looking images. Also note that I didn't introduce new colours to your image, just amped up the saturation.
Honestly right now I suggest you start your paintings in black and white and then move to colour. Will help you focus on values and colour separately while you get used to using the two of them.
I included the black and white version so that you can see that the contrast in values on the face makes it a focal point, with the sword as a secondary focal point.

Also obviously the saturation is very exaggerated but like the previous anons said you should push yourself to the limit first and then once you've learned to control that, tone it back a bit where you see fit.
