It's just like learning anything else. There can be no singular guide on what books to read and how to practice. Everyone has different goals in art, thinks in different ways, and learns at different rates. This is why knowing how to learn is an important skill in general.

The basics of learning are just breaking down larger goals into smaller ones, being able to assess your skill level, and prescribing yourself practice and study to reach these small goals. In art, getting a good grasp of some combination of the fundamentals might be the first long term goal.

Art is different than other activities because there are a few separate areas that you need to train: observation, technique, knowledge, design sense (essentially taste), and creativity. Maybe more.

Building technique and observation skills requires repetition over long stretches of time. This is why people tell beginning artists to draw more. Even shitty, but experienced and passionate artists, like Jazza have good line economy (when it comes to things they are used to drawing). They've gotten better at placing more accurate strokes because of how much they have drawn.

Beginner mistakes that hinder improvement would be not looking at their work for specific issues they are consistently having and not actively working at eliminating the issue. Another major issue would be not applying the knowledge they picked up from reading in their drawings. This is very important for ingraining certain principles into their drawing process.

Art can take a long time to learn for some people. If that is you, don't be stupid about trying to learn art. You need to practice deliberately.

Draw from life, draw with atmospheric perspective, think about weight. Don't draw something perfectly even all around. It is up to you to decide what is important in a drawing and what is not.
