if its sloppy it will always look bad. to start you should try to draw with just two tones a light tone for light and a dark tone for shadow. later you can add more tones in the light area and mid tones. you should have the most variation in tone where the light translations into shadow, have little variation in the light, and no variation in shadow to make them flat.
