Total beginner here. A friend recommended me this book. Is this reliable?

I'm buckling down to draw comics and I want to get better at using references for the faces so that each character looks different and unique, so I keep trying to use the faces of actors and I'm realizing all these years of learning how to built people from shapes from how-to books on cartoons has severely stunted my ability to look at something and draw it.
So I started the video lesson from this book and as soon as it got to the Igor Stravinski part where you have to draw it upside down, my brain kept fucking up at the hands so bad I had to stop drawing just to wind down and keep trying.
Anyone here have any tips or advice on, I guess, unlearning drawing what you know and learning to draw what you see?
If this question has been asked a lot and you find it annoying, please don't reply, I'm just looking for help from people who maybe have seen this problem before or dealt with it themselves.

So I've got some beginners questions, and I figure it'd be better to ask in here opposed to making my own thread. I've been working through Fun with Pencil, and right after working through the "blooks" but once I get towards applying it towards more realistic faces I just deteriorate.

I was thinking of trying Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain, in hopes it'd be a little easier then I could move back into Loomis. However, the edition I keep finding (simply added "New" to the title) so far has been pages of psycho babble with no activities. Is the older edition the same? Or does it have actual activities? Or should I continue to struggle through Loomis?

Pic related, the edition I can't seem to find.

How would /ic/ rate Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain as a learning tool for a beginning artist?
I'd like to learn to draw and everybody seems to swear by this book.
