Because you're a hundred times more likely to make it with a degree (ie being in an enviornment where people come to draw and study fundamentals rigorously) than trying to teach yourself. Being self-taught has its perks of course, but it's very very easy to get lost on what to do in order to improve and/or love motivation and discipline quickly.

If you have some sort of road map on what to improve on, lots of discipline, work ethic and motivation, then yeah. You can easily make it being self-taught. However, most people are lazy fucks who can't sit down and do the hard work that is required, and quickly lose motivation along the way.

So what I'm getting from this is in order to git gud you have to:
>1. Find an illustration you want to draw/achieve
>2. Try to imitate the style as close as possible and create your own illustration (don't try to draw an exact copy of your source, just the atmosphere and feeling of the illustration)
>3. Complete the illustration, don't stop midway even if it's terrible
>4. Compare your drawing with the original source and think what needs to be done in order to achieve a result similar to your source.
>5. Repeat from step two ad infinitum until you achieve your goal
