once you learn all the "rules" it's like you reach a point where you have to unlearn it. Another thing is people who grind fundies tend to be very analytical and knowing when to bend the rules to fit a larger idea is a skill on its own (atleast for me).

When I focus alot on how to make something look "correct" I tend to lose sight of the larger message Im trying to express by over anylyzing and correcting as I go instead of just leaving it alone.

ironically, despite all the practice I do, my favorite works typically have the fewest/loosest guidelines

I enjoy technically accurate work for the skill that went into making it look "real" but the best most high level stuff that leaves the strongest impression usually has really loose brushstrokes/lines, proportion errors, unrealistic lighting, symbols etc.. but in a way that still looks like everything is where it should be, its hard to put my finger on why that is.
